John D. Bottero

Born on Cape Cod and raised in central Maine, John developed an understanding of the power of diversity very early. After an enlistment in the US Navy, he earned an electronics degree, and began working at Raytheon, a major defense manufacturer. During his time at Raytheon, he attended Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island where he graduated with a degree in Technical Business Management.

After the collapse of the Berlin Wall, John began his own business buying and selling antiques with a keen eye to the auction method of marketing. Moving to midcoast Maine in 1992, he met and began working with Kaja Veilleux, an icon in the Maine antiques marketplace. He became a licensed auctioneer and helped build Thomaston Place Auction Galleries to its current international status. Serving as the Vice President of Thomaston Place for over 10 years, he has had the opportunity to work with the people of midcoast Maine to create positive, rewarding selling experiences of their most valuable assets.

Auctions are a very effective way to market rare and important items, whether it’s fine art or real estate. With today’s internet marketing opportunities, many experts project a significant amount of growth in the use of auctions as a powerful real-time marketing option.

John enjoys giving back to his community as often as he can, frequently teaching in the local adult education programs and senior colleges, as well as offering his time as guest lecturer for historical societies, libraries, and many other non-profit groups. He is particularly fond of the dozens of fundraising auctions that he is asked to call each year, netting hundreds of thousands of dollars which are put to use by the many non-profit organizations serving the communities of midcoast Maine.
